Adobe Encore Reaches End-Of-Life

Some potential bad news for DVD and Blu-Ray creators using Adobe products. Adobe has announced that Encore, their DVD / Blu-Ray creation software, has reached End-of-Life status. This means there will be no Encore CC.

According to a FAQ section on Adobe.com, “The trend in the video and broadcast industry is moving away from physical media distribution. The future is in cloud and streaming content. Therefore we are focusing more on products that deliver to streaming services. For example, Adobe Media Encoder and Adobe Premiere Pro CC include a new feature allowing users to create iPad-ready video with QuickTime chapter markers. The Encore CS6 version will be the final release of this product.”

Encore CS6 is still available for those subscribing to Creative Cloud, though it will no longer be updated. As far as technical support goes, Adobe says, “Yes, Adobe will continue to offer support for installation and registration issues associated with Adobe Encore. Additionally, the online support resources will allow customers to access existing documentation, as well as tap into community support via the product forums. Customers who have maintenance agreements with Adobe can be confident they will continue to receive support for the duration of their contract.”

A few things to note about using Encore with Premiere Pro CC – dynamic linking will no longer work between Premiere Pro CC and Encore CS6.

But what about OS updates? Adobe’s website says, “Encore CS6 is supported on Microsoft® Windows® 7 with Service Pack 1 (64 bit) and Mac OS X v10.6.8 or v10.7. Please note that Encore CS6 support for future operating system updates or new hardware platforms will not be provided.” Or in other words, wait for someone else to test a Windows 8.1 machine for Encore CS6 compatibility before upgrading your Windows-based box if you require Encore CS6.

This is not the first DVD-authoring package to reach end-of-life status. Apple’s DVD Studio Pro was done away with in 2011. It had been part of Final Cut Studio, which was discontinued shortly after the introduction of Final Cut Pro X. Even then, DVD Studio Pro was essentially the same piece of software from 2006 until Final Cut Studio’s demise in 2011.

Connecting a Display to the Dock

The Thunderbolt port on your computer is essentially a Mini DisplayPort video connection that adds high speed PCIe for data. The DVI 3600HD allows you to operate a single DVI-compliant computer from two workstations, by extending DVI, USB 2.0, analog audio, and RS-232 from the computer to the remote workstation. USB peripherals can be placed at either of the two locations, by the Sender or Receiver unit

How It Works

The DVI 3600HD consists of a Sender and a Receiver unit. The Sender unit connects to the computer’s DVI-compliant video card output, analog audio jack, RS-232 port, and USB 2.0 port. The DVI 3600HD Receiver unit connects to the remote display and peripherals. Four strands of LC fiber optic cable connect the Sender and Receiver units together.

The DVI 3600HD has two modes of USB operation. When in local mode, the computer sees USB devices connected to the Sender unit. When in remote mode, the computer sees USB devices connected to the Receiver unit. These two modes are configured using a switch on the front panel of the Sender unit.

Note:  Extension distance will depend on the type of fiber media used:

Single-mode fiber: WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution @ 6,600 ft. (2000m)

Multi-mode fiber: WUXGA (1920 x 1200) resolution @ 1,650 ft. (500m)

By having IS-mini interlock with IS-100 connected to the main camera and main monitor, and having the equipment information of the shooting camera and image checking monitor to be connected with IS-100, registered in IS-100, the color conversion table is automatically sent from IS-100 to IS-mini. This enables to check the final images with appropriate color conversion according to the color conversion table of each IS-100, even if a camera or monitor of a different manufacturer and model than the main camera and main monitor is connected to IS-mini. Ideal color management is possible on large scale shooting sets, where multiple cameras and monitors are used at the same time.
If IS-mini recorded with the color conversion table used and generated with IS-100 is connected with the monitor and image output equipment, used in post-production for editing and finishing up images, color intended by the director on the film set is correctly reproduced on the monitor, which streamlines post-production work.

Monitor calibration

Monitor calibration is possible if the figure measured with the spectrophotometer for the monitor is entered into the computer and IS-mini recorded with the color conversion table created on the computer is connected with the monitor and image output equipment. Anyone can easily conduct calibration by following the instructions of the accompanying software IS-mini MANAGER, even if they have no special knowledge of color management. This enables color matching for not only shooting sets but also monitors in a broad range of business operations that handle images including production companies, post-production and advertisement production companies.

Camera preview of the shot images is available on the monitor in appropriate color reproduction according to the color conversion table of camera, recorder and monitor generated by IS-100 if this IS-mini is connected with the camera (or recorder) and monitor on the film set.
