Magic Lantern DNG RAW Files Now Supported in DaVinci Resolve 9.1.5

Blackmagic DaVinci Resolve 9.1.5 Magic Lantern SupportWhile there are some workflow solutions to get your Magic Lantern RAW files into the more video-friendly CinemaDNG format (like RAWMagic), Blackmagic has just released an update to DaVinci Resolve that gives support to the regular DNG files (both CinemaDNG and DNG use the .DNG file type). These files, created by applications like raw2dng, are slightly different than CinemaDNG, which is why they previously did not work in Resolve. With the newest 9.1.5 update, they will now drop right into the program after they’ve been converted from the .RAW format. Click through for a look at the rest of the changes in this update.

I tried out a few files and it seems to be working all right, and even though I still like RAWMagic for converting to CinemaDNG, it’s great to have the option to go right into Resolve after using raw2dng, which does have some advantages over something like RAWMagic. For example, raw2dng can now automatically create a ProRes file of each clip when you drag your DNGs into the program. This can be very handy so that you can immediately know whether you’ve got anything good to work with, and you could also take those ProRes files right into an editor and replace them when you’re ready to color correct.

If you’re on a PC, and want something a little more user friendly, I’ve heard some good things about EyeFrame Converter, which will allow you to bring in Magic Lantern RAW files and export them to any number of other formats.

The CP100 generic control panel from Tangent Devices provides an ergonomic user interface to any software package that requires a wide range of input controls at the operator’s fingertips. More intuitive than using just a pen and tablet, it can increase operator efficiency.Designed with the film and video post production industry in mind, its layout was conceived in close consultation with users. This was combined with over ten years experience that Tangent Devices has in this industry. CP100 Generic Control Panel
Panel Construction:

The panel uses high quality optical shaft encoders and trackerballs. All the displays are VFD, which give superb brightness and viewing angles.

The integral power supply is auto selecting which gives worldwide compatibility. Built into the panel is an integral mounting lip, which allows the panel to be sunk into a desktop. Alternatively, the panel can be used free standing on the desk resting on its angled under-tray. Optional fascia colours and materials are available. All keycaps can be removed and replaced with custom engraved legends.

Knob And Button Pairs:

There are 4 groups of these controls. Each group comprises 3 knob and button pairs. Above each group there is a 2 line by 40-character VFD display.

A typical example for the use of these is for the knob to control a variable with button resetting it. The display above the pair can be used to label the control and provide status information for it.

Button Rows:

There are 3 rows of buttons, each contains 7 buttons, 1 of which is labeled MORE. Above each row there is a 2 line by 40-character VFD display.

A typical example for the use of these is to use the MORE button to step through banks of controls that have been assigned to the buttons. The display above the buttons can label the controls assigned to them.

Trackerballs And Master Dials:

There are 3 trackerballs, each with a master control dial, 5 buttons (3 of these are labeled as function keys) and a 2 line by 20-character VFD display.

A typical example for the use of these is to control functions where the operator needs to adjust 3 variables simultaneously (e.g. colour correction – YUV or position/size – XYZ). The 2 un-labeled buttons can be used as resets for the controls. Macro functions could be assigned to the 3 function buttons. The display is there to label the controls and provide status information.

Transport Controls:

There are a group of 5 buttons with transport legends (i.e. play, stop etc). Grouped with these is a jog/shuttle dial.

Management Buttons And Numerical Entry Key Pad:

There is a group of 16 buttons laid out as a numerical entry keypad. Additional buttons in this group are labeled as arithmetic functions, decimal point, CLEAR and MODE. A further 18 buttons are labeled with common functions found in editing and list management such as MARK, CUE, IN, OUT, MEM, RECALL etc. There is also an additional jog/shuttle dial with this group and a 2 line by 40-character VFD display.

Communications Protocol:

The physical connection to the CP100 is via a standard RJ45 10 Base T Ethernet connection. The CP100 uses a simple key-down / key-up and encoder-moved protocol. The host can send text to any of the displays, with the facility for user-defined characters for custom graphics. For information on custom protocols, please contact Tangent Devices.

Following on from the success of the CP100 Generic Control Panel, Tangent Devices introduced the CP200 Modular Control Panels. This range is designed to accommodate the requirements of users who need only certain features of the CP100, or who wish maximise the use of a physical interface by combining as many panel modules as they need, creating a panel set to exceed the capabilities of the CP100. Download a PDF of product information CP200 Modular Control Panel Range
Quality Components

As with the CP100, the CP200 panels use proven high quality components. Some of these have their origins in the F1 motor racing and aerospace industries. The fascias are machined from a solid 12mm thick aluminium block giving the panel a strong, weighty feel that reinforces the overall quality. The displays are Vacuum Florescent Displays (VFD) which give a good contrast ratio and wide viewing angle, making them far superior to equivalent LCD or LED displays. All the control knobs are optical digital rotary encoders, giving a smooth high resolution response and a long life.

Interface to the host application

Each panel is simply patched into the host platform’s Ethernet network. IP address assignment may be done automatically if a DHCP server is running on the network or explicitly by the application if this feature is not supported by the host application.
The functionality of each panel is totally determined by the host application so it’s impossible here to list which controls operate which functions. Please contact your software vendor for further information on their implementation.

Panel Types

There are 4 panel types: The CP200-BK, The CP200-TS, CP200-K and the CP200-S. Details of each of these can be found below.

CP200-BK Trackerball / Knob Panel

CP200-BKCP200-BK

The CP200-BK is intended for users who require a control surface for primary colour grading with the addition of three knobs to control parameters such as pan/scan or basic secondary grading controls. It provides the operator with the familiar 3 trackerballs used to control lift, gamma and gain grading  parameters. This arrangement gives a full 9 axes of simultaneous control that is impossible to achieve with either a mouse or pen and tablet.

The trackerball units have been custom designed to fit with the ergonomics of the unit. Profiled outer rings provide the third axis of control and are weighted to give positive tactile feedback. The differential ball controls are slightly recessed and have an integral wrist rest giving a natural hand position for operation.

Five keys are located just above each trackerball. It is suggested that two of these are used for master and differential resets with the other three available for application specific functions.

The three rotary controls beneath the display are arranged as knob/button pairs. It is suggested that the buttons next to each knob are used as resets for the knobs.

A single, angled, 40 x 2 character VFD display is located at the top of the panel which will be useful to indicate mode, value or status for the panel or the 3 knobs beneath it.

CP200-TS Transport / Selection Panel

The CP200-TS is intended to provide the user with a familiar transport layout for controlling VTR like source and record decks. In many applications these will not be ‘real’ VTR’s, but instead will be data files stored on a computer based storage system.

A rotary encoder with large dial is provided for Jog/Shuttle functions. This has illuminated Stop, Left and Right indicators providing status feedback for the control.

There is a numerical keypad for operations like timecode entry, and a set of keys labeled with typical grading and editing functions.

A single, angled, 40 x 2 character VFD display is located at the top of the panel which will be useful to indicate mode, or can be used to label the 5 buttons beneath it.

CP200-K Knob Panel

The CP200-K is intended for users who require fingertip control of a large number of parameters, with each parameter having its own rotary control knob.

The 12 rotary controls are arranged in 4 rows of 3 knob/button pairs. As with the CP200-BK, it is suggested that the buttons next to each knob are used as resets for the knobs.

A single, angled, 40 x 2 character VFD display is located above each row of knobs which will be useful to indicate mode, value or status for the 3 knobs beneath it.

CP200-S Selection Panel:

The CP200-S is designed to complete the set. It has 4 rows of 5 buttons, with display above each row. The displays can either label the function of the buttons or provide at-a-glance feedback. The buttons themselves allow direct access to a function or can be used to access menu items. Each row has a “MORE” button to allow access to sub-menu items or further pages of controls.

Although our panels do not need a driver to work with Mac OS X, they do need a plug-in to enable user customisation and the ability to communicate with Color. The plug-in is bundled together with a utility allowing customisation of the panel operation in a Mac OS X installation package called the Color Support Package.

Please note that Apple Color v1.5 or higher is required for the plug-in to function.

Customising the user interface couldn’t be simpler

The Panel Control Mapper tool included in the support package presents a graphical representation of the panels, just click on a control in the application and assign a Color parameter or action from the list. For controls that can be assigned to a knob or trackerball you can also set the sensitivity. Alternate parameters, actions and sensitivities can be programmed for activation when the ALT key is held down. All this can be done live, while Color is still running.

Multiple custom mappings are possible and thse are all stored within your home directory. This means that every user automatically has their own set of mappings.

  • vWave-Lite allows you to control Color as distributed in Apple’s Final Cut Studio suite of tools.
  • The three “virtual” trackerballs allow you to control the colour differential and masters in the Primary In, Secondaries and Primary Out rooms in Color, just like you would with our CP200 or Wave panels.
  • You can use vWave-Lite at the same time as your CP200 or Wave but you do not need either of these panels for it to work.
  • All the controls on vWave-Lite can be used simultaneously.

Intuitive

When it comes to having lots of controls, one of the problems can be “just what does each control do?” This isn’t the case with Element; every programmable control is clearly labelled, so if the function of the control changes, so does its display label – no more having to refer back to reference notes or on screen help. When Element panels are used with Tangent’s Hub service* you can even customise the layout of the controls, making the panels even more intuitive.

*This requires the host application to support the Tangent Hub API and the Mapper option. Note the Mapper is not currently released and is expected end of 2012.

Function and style

Apart from the size, the first thing you will notice about Element is the stylish, ultra slim design. Quality comes in the form of a solid aluminium, precision laser cut case. But it doesn’t end there; all the internal components have been carefully chosen for reliability. All rotary controls and trackerballs have optical pickups, which means they are long-life and high precision.
The buttons are ultra-reliable with a positive tactile response. The displays are crisp, high-contrast, high-resolution, easy to read, white OLEDs. When put side by side the panels magnetically lock together, keeping the layout neatly aligned.

Cost effective

You would have thought that all this comes with a high price tag – not so with Element!
